Firefighters needed for early morning truck blaze

A West Penn Power Company bucket truck was badly damaged this morning when it caught fire in Butler Township. No one was injured.

The driver was traveling in the truck when he noticed the fire. He stopped in the parking lot of the former Kervin Subaru dealership on New Castle Road near the state police barracks about 6:45 a.m. and grabbed a fire extinguisher.

Trooper Josh Sheppeck and Cpl. Jacob Jesse were on their way to work saw the fire and each grabbed their own extinguisher.

The three extinguishers were unable to put out the fire.

“We kept it down a bit,” Jesse said, “but we couldn't get to where the fire was.”

The fire was coming from the engine compartment.

“We tamped it down long as we could until we ran out of juice and fire extinguishers, then it was up to these guys, Sheppeck said, pointing to Butler Township volunteer and Butler City firefighters.

Crews were able to knock out the fire in several minutes. The truck is considered totaled.
