The city of Butler and the U.S. Census Bureau are teaming up to help residents fill out 2020 Census forms at two city parks.

Officials from the city and bureau are bringing computers to Rotary Park Friday and the Institute Hill playground on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at both locations.

City officials are bringing the four iPads it obtained through a grant, and bureau officials are bringing equipment they need to the parks to help people complete the Census before the Sept. 30 deadline.

“We're just trying to make one last push to get people to complete the Census,” city Councilman Jeff Smith said.

The overall response to the Census from city and county residents has been good, but responses from areas of the city near the parks has been lacking, he said, adding that any county resident can come to either site.

Completing the Census is fast, easy and safe, he said.

“Nobody will have to wait very long,” Smith said,

The city is sponsoring drawings for gift cards from area businesses at both parks and there will be other giveaways, he said.

The Census is important to the city and county because the results are used by the state and federal governments to determine the amount of funding communities will receive for roads, schools, housing and social programs, and to determine how many representatives each state will have in Congress.

“Everybody benefits from doing it. It helps the city and county,” Smith said.
