Moniteau churns out 21-14 win

Defense keys Union/ACV

Moniteau rolled up 343 yards on the ground and the defense forced three turnovers as the Warriors won at Punxsutawney, 21-14, in football action Friday night.

Mason Mershimer led the way for Moniteau’s punishing ground game with 175 yards and 17 carries and two touchdowns.

J.D. Dessicino added 72 yards on 14 carries and the other TD for the Warriors (1-1).

Quarterback David Stamm also rushed for 86 yards in the win.

Moniteau turned the ball over three times, but the defense made sure that didn’t cost the Warriors.

Stamm had two interceptions and also had eight tackles.

Mershimer had six tackles for a loss.

Union/A-C Valley 14, Keystone 7 — Kylar Culberston returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown as the Falcon Knight defense came up big again.

Carter Terwint had 13 tackles and Caden Rainey also had an interception for Union/ACV’s dominating defensive unit.

The offense did just enough.

Rainey also found the end zone on a rush and finished with 29 yards.

Tanner Merwin led the way with 39 yards on the ground.

Greensburg Salem 13, Knoch 12 — Keith Washington scored on a pair of 1-yard runs to cap drives of 78 and 60 yards, but the Knights suffered a tough 1-point loss.

It was the 700th win for the Greensburg Salem program.

Apollo-Ridge 48, Freeport 14 — Ben Lane rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown, but the Yellowjackets fell at home.

Brady Stiverson had two receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown for Freeport.

Logan Harmon rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns and Jake Fello threw for 157 yards and a score for Apollo-Ridge.

Golf

Butler (6-3, 5-3) received a 37 from Ryan Porch and defeated North Hills, 201-252, Friday at Hiland. Colin Patterson and Tyler Figlioli both shot 39 for the Golden Tornado.

Mars 202, Pine-Richland 210 — Blake Bertolo was medalist for the Planets (5-4) with a 35.

Shady Side Academy 186, Knoch 255 — Gabe Cornetti had a 47 for the Knights (2-8). Mitch Davies had a 49 and Cory Voltz 50.

Girls Soccer

Megan Vasas, Macrina Robb and Brooke Galcik all scored goals Thursday as Knoch defeated Indiana, 3-2.

Natalie Brands had an assist and Grace Foehringer was the winning goalkeeper.

The Knights (1-2, 1-1) play Monday at Kiski Area.
