Samuel Schirra

Samuel Schirra was co-valedictorian of the Class of 2020 of Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh in Gibsonia at its Aug. 1 commencement.

He received the religion department award and the Math department award. Sam also received the Aquinas Award, the school's award given to the upper school student who through academic achievement, love of God, and contributions to the academy best represents in daily life the ideals and goals of Aquinas Academy.

Sam graduated summa cum laude and is currently a freshman at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

He is the son of Laurie and John Schirra of Penn Township.

Seneca Valley High School senior Sarah Widenhofer appeared in the bright lights of Broadway Sept. 12.The Cranberry Township teen was a part of the National Down Syndrome Society's (NDSS) annual Times Square Video presentation that featured photographs highlighting children, teens and adults with Down syndrome.The photo of Sarah was selected as one of 500 photographs that appeared in the video, streamed on NDSS social media from the heart of Times Square.The Times Square Video presentation kicks off Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October.

In recognition of her research project submitted for the Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair (PRSEF), a Freeport Area Middle School student has been named among the top 300 competitors in the 2020 Broadcom MASTERS, the nation's premier science, technology, engineering and math competition for middle school students. Anne Lindsay submitted the project, “The Optimal Amount of Titanium Dioxide Needed to Reduce Bacterial Proliferation.”Each of the top 300 MASTERS receive a $125 award from the Department of Defense Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (DoD STEM). Thirty of the top 300 will be selected as finalists by a panel of scientists, engineers, and educators from around the nation to compete for over $100,000 in prizes.
