HERMAN — Summit Academy will not be participating in fall sports in 2020.

The school's head football coach, Joe Marak, confirmed that decision Wednesday. He could not be reached for further comment.

Athletic director Ryan Parrish informed WPIAL executive director Amy Scheuneman of that decision in a letter earlier this week.

Parrish wrote: “Please be advised that Summit Academy has determined that it is in the best interests of our students not to participate in Fall Sports. ... We are disappointed in making this decision, but these are difficult times.”

Summit Academy, a court-adjudicated school for boys, offers football and golf as fall sports.

Scheuneman stated in a Monday press conference that the WPIAL is in full support of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's move to postpone a decision on the fate of high school athletics this fall until PIAA officials can meet with Gov.Tom Wolf's office.

Summit Academy becomes the second WPIAL school deciding on its own not to compete this fall. Uniontown canceled its football and soccer seasons earlier this month.

The Knights' football team has won one game over the past two seasons. Summit Academy finished 4-6 and qualified for the WPIAL playoffs in 2017.

Summit Academy began its football program in 1998.
