Woman rescued after falling 20 feet into Slippery Rock Creek while hiking at McConnells Mill

A woman was rescued Monday afternoon after she fell about 20 feet near a popular vista for visitors at McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County.

A medical helicopter later flew her to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh with apparent leg and head injuries. Her condition was not available.

According to park officials, the woman was hiking in the area of Kildoo Falls near a covered bridge about 1 p.m. when she fell approximately 20 feet into Slippery Rock

Creek.

Volunteer firefighters trained in rope rescue techniques reached the woman and used a Stokes basket as part of the effort.

A landing zone was set up for the helicopter at the Kildoo parking lot, the park's main lot, .

Fire departments called in to assist were Slippery Rock, Scott, Perry and Wayne townships, all in Lawrence County. Noga Ambulance also assisted.

The Memorial Day rescue came as park rangers continued searching for a 38-year-old Crawford County man who fell into the creek May 2 while hiking on the Kildoo Trail with his fiancee just downstream from the covered bridge.

Rangers have made daily search efforts for the man, Jeffery Hanby II of Meadville, since he fell into the water and was swept away.
