Man allegedly threw moonshine on woman, child

Aaron Moyers

A West Virginia man is accused of dousing a woman and her infant son with moonshine and threatening to light them on fire Sunday night at their apartment on Wick Street in Butler.

The suspect, Aaron T. Moyers, 42, of Bruceton Mills, also allegedly poured more moonshine at the home and tried to ignite it with a lighter. No injuries were reported.

Police arrested Moyers, who was arraigned Monday on felony charges of arson, risking a catastrophe, attempting to commit those same two crimes, and misdemeanor charges of terroristic threats and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He also was arraigned on summary charges of public drunkenness and harassment. District Judge Lewis Stougton remanded the defendant to the Butler County Prison without bail, citing the danger he posed to society.

Police said they were called about 8:30 p.m. Sunday to the victim's home that is part of an apartment complex. A caller reported that Moyers “just attempted to burn down the residence and dumped a liquid on someone,” according to charging documents.

Officers spoke to the victim and another tenant as well as two others who apparently were visiting there. One of those visitors was the suspect's ex-wife, police said.

The 25-year-old victim recounted that Moyers had knocked on her apartment door, and when she opened it, while holding her 6-month-old son, he immediately doused her and the child with moonshine.

He is accused of threatening to light both on fire. Police said two witnesses reported seeing Moyers trying to light the apartment on fire, after allegedly pouring moonshine on it.

A motive, police said, was unclear.

Officers found Moyers walking nearby on Miller Avenue. A pat-down search, police said, turned up a lighter and a plastic jug containing moonshine liquor. He also allegedly had a marijuana pipe

Moyers smelled of alcohol and, documents said, he “admitted to drinking the moonshine throughout the day.”
