Two people in Karns City suffer gunshot wounds from same bullet Friday

A single bullet fired from a pistol left a young man and woman with gunshot wounds Friday afternoon at a home in Petrolia, state police said.

The shooting about 3:40 p.m. appeared to be accidental, according to Trooper Robert Rottman. The victims - Dakota Anthony, 19, and Veronica Fair, 22 - were taken to hospitals but the injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Anthony suffered wounds to the hand and thigh. Fair had a wound to the shin.

The shooting happened at Fair's home on Main Street while the victims were on the couch in the living room, police said. No one else was in the house.

Fair told police that Anthony was apparently unloading the magazine from the 9 mm pistol when the gun accidentally went off.

The round struck and went through Anthony's left hand, striking and going through his left thigh, and hitting Fair's right shin, Rottman said.

Karns City Regional Ambulance and Sugarcreek Ambulance were called. Anthony was taken to Karns City High School where a medical helicopter landed before taking him to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.

His injuries were considered moderate.

Fair was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with minor to moderate injuries. It was not immediately clear if she remained there or if she was taken to another hospital for further treatment.

Police said they recovered the gun and a spent casing at the house. The bullet was lodged in Fair's leg.

They also found blood on the couch and on the carpet where the victims were sitting.

One of the victims after the shooting called Anthony's grandmother. She was there when police arrived. She told investigators that the teen's mother had given him the gun to take care of, police said.

Police were still trying to determine the gun's owner.

Investigators said they are looking into the possibility that one or both victims may have been impaired at the time of the shooting. Police did not rule out that charges could be filed following the investigation.
