Man accused of stealing items from car repair shop

A Lawrence County man is wanted on charges he stole more than $7,000 in tools and other property from a relative's car repair shop in Slippery Rock, authorities said.

District Judge Bill O'Donnell on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for Mathew J. Maravola, 50, of New Castle. He is charged with a felony count of theft.

Slippery Rock police filed the case following an investigation that began April 14 when the owner of Brake Doctor Service Center and Towing reported numerous items missing from his business on North Main Street.

The owner told officers that his shop had been closed since April 9 due to the coronavirus pandemic, which had slowed business, police said.

The suspect, who is the victim's cousin, had been working at the shop when the items turned up missing between April 9 and 14. Police said the owner confronted Maravola, who allegedly stated, “Sorry, I messed up. It was my fault.”

Among the property reported stolen, police said, were nine car batteries, a Honda generator, torches and oxygen tanks, used tires, two pressure washers, and speciality and air tools.

Additional missing property included electronic devices, a chain saw, television, space heater, shop vac, laptop computer and 10 state inspection stickers.

In all, according to the criminal complaint, the stolen property was valued at $7,200.41.

Police said they tried calling Maravola but to no avail. They also noted that he has unrelated bench warrants out of Butler and Lawrence counties, and an unspecified warrant out of Youngstown, Ohio.
