About 900 residents in Butler County are still without electricity following strong overnight storms that toppled trees and downed wires.

West Penn Power officials said service to 894 customers in the county was still out as of 10 a.m. today. Central Electric Cooperative reported seven members have no service.

The highest concentration of outages appear to be in Butler Township, particularly in the areas of Highland Avenue near Roberts Street and Reich Avenue.

Butler Township Police Chief John Hays said wires were reportedly knocked down on Highland Avenue, and about 1 a.m. a tree came down on power lines on Thornwood Drive near Route 68 and Oakdale Road. West Penn crews were notified of both incidents.

Some of the other remaining outages are in the areas of Neupert and Marwood roads in Jefferson Township, west of Hufnagel Road in Muddy Creek Township and east of Peffer Lane in Lancaster Township.

County dispatchers said their weather-related calls and alarms started coming in about 12:45 a.m. The incidents, mostly downed trees and power lines were scattered across the county and continued until around 2:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh reported that a line of thunderstorm passed through the regional shortly after midnight, bringing heavy rain and wind gusts.

Pittsburgh International Airport measured a 75 mph wind gust at 1:06 a.m. “This is the highest thunderstorm wind gust at the airport ever,” the weather service noted in a tweet.

It appeared Butler County was spared any flooding, however, more luck is on the county's side as dry weather is expected with increasing sunshine through the afternoon. High temperatures will be several degrees above normal.

Showers are likely early Thursday morning and continuing during the day.

And, brace yourself, snow is possible beginning Thursday night. The weather service said there is a chance of rain and snow showers between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Friday. The low will be around 31.

On Friday, there will be a chance of snow showers before 10 a.m., and then a chance of rain and snow showers between 10 a.m. and noon.
