Business and basketball

JACKSON TWP — Mason Bush realizes he is doing things a bit backward.

The Seneca Valley senior hasn't even stepped foot into a college-level business class and already he co-owns an esports company that is flourishing.

Team Divine, the streaming esports business Bush runs with his cousin, Chaise Tantalo, has built a loyal following of 200,000 viewers, a sponsorship from another company in San Diego and sells its own merchandise on its website.

“It's really growing right now,” Bush said.

Esports has grown exponentially over the past several years and has seen a spike in recent weeks with most of the country under a shelter-in-place order because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bush's company, Team Divine, has also seen an up-tick.

“We have 30 people who are live-streamers for us,” Bush said. “It's been crazy.”

Business also led him to Penn State Altoona, where Bush will also play basketball.

As a senior at Seneca Valley, Bush was a force. He averaged 19 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for the Raiders.

“I had a super-tough process,” Bush said of picking a college. “A lot of good schools were interested in me.”

But Bush knew what he wanted: a good business school that also offered a minor in entrepreneurship.

He also wanted to extend his basketball career.

Penn State Altoona ticked all the boxes.

“The last couple of weeks have been eye-opening for me about how much I actually miss (playing basketball),” Bush said. “These are going to be my last years playing and I want to make the most of them.”

The 6-foot-4 Bush was mainly a perimeter player until shifting inside this season.

“His game is very versatile, especially on offense,” said Seneca Valley boys basketball coach Kevin Trost. “A really good high school player can score at all three levels and he can shoot from the outside, from midrange and drive to the hoop. He expanded his post-up game this year.”

Bush had a breakout season as a junior, averaging 15 points and five rebounds per game.

Strangely during his senior year, Bush gained 10 pounds.

He's already shed that weight and plans on dropping more, especially at the next level where he'll likely play guard.

Bush has a basketball hoop and a makeshift weight room at home. His father puts him through his workout paces.

Bush is determined to make a mark as a freshman at Penn State Altoona.

“I'm going to fight for minutes and be an impact player my freshman year,” Bush said. “I have to get quicker and I've been working hard already on that.”
