Nearly 1,600 new cases of COVID-19 reported overnight in the commonwealth

As of noon Saturday Pennsylvania Department of Health reported an additional 1,597 positive cases of the coronavirus in the commonwealth since its Friday update, bringing the statewide total to 10,017.The department also reports a total of 136 deaths, an increase of 34 from the day before.Locally, the health department reports 84 positive cases in Butler County.According to Jana Panther, a spokeswoman for Butler Health Systems, Butler Memorial Hospital is actively treating 18 in-patients for virus-like symptoms. Of the 18 patients, seven are suspected of having COVID-19. Eleven people tested positive with two of the 18 being treated in the ICU. Clarion Hospital is currently treating one confirmed case in the ICU.Deaths from the virus have remained unchanged with two in Butler County.Neighboring Allegheny County now reports 552 positive cases and three deaths according to the health department.Based on the report, data for other surrounding counties are as follows: Westmoreland, 135 confirmed cases; Beaver, 69 confirmed cases and six deaths; Lawrence, 22 confirmed cases and 2 deaths; Armstrong, 12 confirmed cases; Mercer, 14 confirmed cases; Clarion, 4 confirmed cases; and Venango, 3 confirmed cases.As of Saturday there have been 276,383 positive cases nationwide, including 7,122 deaths.Should there be a significant surge in Butler County, BHS announced that Benbrook Ambulatory Surgery Center and Broad Street Elementary School could be used as backup facilities. BHS continues to work with local, state and federal officials on access to other facilities throughout the region.BHS continues to encourage all donations of personal protective equipment.
