'Lowlights' video gaining traction for Trojan senior

Rottmann enjoys poking fun at his own basketball mistakes

Airballs, turnovers, travels and flubs.

Forgettable plays to be sure for any basketball player.

But not for North Catholic senior Hans Rottmann.

He embraced the bad.

While many high school seniors make highlight videos showcasing their stellar skills and post it on Twitter and other platforms, Rottmann decided to make a two-minute “2020 Season Lowlights” video.

“I had a lot of free time on my hands,” Rottmann said. “It was just a funny thing I was trying to do. I was having fun with it.”

Rottmann spent five-plus hours watching film from all 28 games that he and the Trojans have played (hopefully, so far) this season to pick out every embarrassing play he could find.

He laughed when he talked about how many there were.

“I was disappointed with myself,” he said, chuckling. “I had a lot of airballs.

“My uncle texted me and said, 'If I hadn't seen you play before, I'd think you were garbage at basketball,'” Rottmann added.

Not long after he posted the video on Twitter Saturday he began to get mentions and retweets.

Soon, news of his video had spread to the four corners of Twitter.

Former Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams, a University of Oklahoma graduate, retweeted Rottmann's video.

He said he wasn't that Roy Williams (the North Carolina men's basketball coach) but that “maybe (Kentucky coach John Calipari) can hook you up.”

Ironically, Calipari hooked up Rottmann's teammate, Isaac DeGregorio, with a preferred walk-on spot on the Wildcats the same day.

“(Isaac) was blowing up on Twitter and I joked with him that I was stealing his thunder,” Rottmann said.

One of the reasons why the video has resonated with so many is because of Rottmann's self-depreciating humor.

Everyone can also relate to his folly, Rottmann said.

“Everyone who has played basketball has shot an airball or made a bad turnover or messed up something,” Rottmann said. “I think everyone can relate. I'm just happy people found it funny and enjoyed it.”
