Pa. jobless claims still setting records

Pennsylvania continues to set records in number of new unemployment claims filed as workers are laid off and businesses close during the coronavirus crisis.

The week of March 15, the state saw 378,900 first-time claims filed, according to the state Department of Labor and Industry, more than sextupling the former highest number of unemployment claims in a week since 1987, which was set by 61,181 claims in early January 2010.

The U.S. Department of Labor does not publicly track state unemployment insurance claims filed earlier than 1987.

An additional 405,879 workers filed unemployment claims the week ending Saturday, and filings both Sunday and Monday brought the 15-day period between March 15 and March 30 to a total of 890,964 unemployment claims.

The previous record for highest number of unemployment compensation claims in one month since 1987 was set in January 2010, when 168,159 workers filed a first-time unemployment claim.
