Suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases at BMH rise to 16

Butler Health System has 16 patients in the hospital as of Wednesday who are either suspected or confirmed to have the coronavirus.

Of the 16 inpatient cases at Butler Memorial Hospital, 14 are suspected of having the virus, two have confirmed results and five are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

Additionally, five more individuals with confirmed cases of COVID-19 are recovering in their homes.

BHS also reported that Clarion Hospital now has two patients who are both suspected of having the virus and are being treated in Clarion's Intensive Care Unit.

Through Tuesday, BHS has tested 566 people, including 384 at BMH's outdoor facility.

Clarion has tested 85 people at their outdoor facility.

Jana Panther, BHS spokesperson, said hospital staff expected an increase of patients exhibiting symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

“BHS has activated surge capacity plans to care for all patients requiring hospitalization, including COVID-19 patients,” Panther said. “BHS continues to focus on patient and staff safety.”

Panther said BHS does have supplies at this time, but the hospital is asking for donations to keep stocks healthy.

BHS also offered the following reminders:

The public should follow CDC and PA DOH guidelines for social distancing, handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home if sick.

Testing requires a prescription and should be performed only on patients who have symptoms.

Call your doctor before going to an office, urgent care or hospital emergency room.
