Widenhofer dies from stroke at 77
COLORADO SPRINGS — Butler native and longtime Pittsburgh Steeler assistant coach Woody Widenhofer died from a stroke Sunday at 77.
Widenhofer spent 11 years on Chuck Noll’s staff with the Steelers. He was a linebackers coach before serving as the team’s defensive coordinator from 1979-83.
Widenhofer was defensive coordinator for the Steelers in their Super Bowl XIV win over the Los Angeles Rams.
He also spent time as head coach at Vanderbilt, Missouri and with the USFL’s Oklahoma Outlaws. Widenhofer’s last year of coaching was 2007, when he was defensive coordinator at New Mexico.
