SRU's Rivers, Lutz get national honors

5 other Rock players earn Hansen All-America plaudits

SLIPPERY ROCK — The postseason honors keep coming for the 2019 Slippery Rock University football team.

SRU quarterback and Harlon Hill Trophy winner Roland Rivers III has been named NCAA Division II Offensive Player of the Year by the Don Hansen Football Committee.

Rock head coach Shawn Lutz — named PSAC West Coach of the Year and Super Region One Coach of the Year earlier — was named Division II Co-Coach of the Year with West Florida's Pete Shinnick by the Hansen committee.

West Florida won the Division II national championship in 2019.

“I must have some good friends on the committee to share the honor with that guy,” Lutz said. “We didn't even get there (national finals).

“But, again, it's not about me. It's about our entire coaching staff, the players and what this team accomplished.”

SRU was 13-1 on the year, unbeaten in the regular season and PSAC champion. Lutz is 39-11 in four years as head coach, including two PSAC West titles, a Division II quarterfinal and semifinal appearance in the past two years.

The Rock's scholarship budget is far below the national limit for Division II football.

“I don't know if that played a factor in this (award), I really don't,” Lutz said. “But I know this kind of stuff helps recruiting.”

SRU will announce its 2020 recruiting class Feb. 5.

Rivers led all of Division II in 2019 with 4,460 passing yards, 52 touchdowns and 5,160 yards of total offense. He threw only seven interceptions. He rushed for 700 yards and nine touchdowns.

Rivers struggled during a briegf appearance in Sunday night's Hula Bowl in Honolulu, throwing an interception and losing a fumble in eight plays.

During the week of practice, Rivers met with coaches from the NFL, Canadian Football League and XFL.

“He didn't have a good game out there, but the week was good for him,” Lutz said of Rivers.

Four other SRU players made the Hansen All-America team. Senior left tackle Chris Larsen (6-foot-4, 320 pounds) made first team offense, junior receiver Henry Litwin and senior left guard Ryan Podgorsi (6-5, 300) third team offense and senior linebacker Brad Zaffram third team defense.

By comparison, only three other players from the entire PSAC made the Hansen All-America team. Senior Califiornia (Pa.) safety Lamont McPhatter made second team defense, senior Kutztown tight end Jack Pilkerton third team offense and Indiana (Pa.) linebacker Damon Lloyd third team defense.

“Chris Larsen was a finalist for the Gene Uopshaw Award (top Division II lineman) this year and has a shot at playing at the next level,” Lutz said.

“Ryan came over from Pitt and became a stalwart on our line (28 successive starts). Henry Litwin was a walk-on and, honestly, could have made first or second team on this list. I'm surprised he didn't.”

Litwin set SRU singleseason records of 103 catches for 1,509 yards and 21 touchdowns. Zaffram led all of Division II linebackers with 19.5 tackles for loss. He led the PSAC in that category as well.

Zaffram had 93 tackles — 61 solo — to lead SRU's defense.

Receiver Jermaine Wynn Jr. made honorable mention All-America after tallying 95 catches for 1,339 yards and 15 scores.
