SUV crashes into porch overnight in Chicora

A one-vehicle crash Monday night in Chicora sent a SUV into a homeowners deck on North Main Street.

CHICORA — A sport utility vehicle went off North Main Street and hit a post to a deck in back of a house late Monday before traveling over a hillside and into the woods, authorities said.

The driver, a 37-year-old Butler man, was not injured. Not as fortunate was the man's SUV, which was likely totaled.

The homeowner was inside but she, too, was not hurt. The home was spared any damage except for the wooden post.

“It definitely was lucky,” said Cody Craig, chief of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department, in assessing the aftermath. “It could have been a lot worse.”

State police subsequently arrested the driver for suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Police said the suspected impaired driver was southbound about 10:40 p.m. when his vehicle crossed over the northbound lane and continued off the road. The vehicle traveled between two houses, emergency crews said, before hitting the wooden support post to the deck of one of the homes.
