Audit could boost district rating

Improvement projects slated

The Butler Area School District had an unassigned fund balance of slightly more than $8 million at the end of the 2018-19 fiscal year, according to an audit discussed at Monday's school board meeting.

The audit, reviewed by Justin Vancheri of the district's auditing firm Hosak, Specht, Muetzel and Wood, contained no findings and will be forwarded to Standard & Poor's to update the district's bond rating.

“You guys have a good management team,” Vancheri told the board.

Board member Bill Halle said the audit is the second consecutive “clean” audit the district has received and it will hopefully result in increasing the district's bond rating.

The fund balance also included $1.1 million in nonspendable money, $2.4 million in committed funds and $1 million in assigned funds.

General fund revenue was $102.9 million, and expenditures were $95.1 million, according the audit report.

Improvement projects

In other business, Superintendent Brian White said three capital projects are about to get underway.

The district soon will advertise for bids for replacing the roof on Emily Brittain Elementary School, paving at the intermediate high school and high school and security upgrades at the high school.

White said the district will advertise for bids for the roof replacement project by the end of this week. Advertising for the paving work will begin Monday, and advertising for the security upgrades will begin in March.

The board approved a change of status for Lesley Fidler from working as Summit Elementary School principal to principal of the district's cyber elementary school program. Fidler was hired as Summit Elementary principal in July 2018.

White said she has been working as the cyber principal, but could not say for how long.

Summit Elementary principal's job is being filled by a substitute at a cost of $300 a day, he said.

The district will have a Kennywood day, but the date hasn't been selected.

White said it has been a number of years since the district's last Kennywood day.

The district is not providing buses for transportation to the park, but parents will be able to use discount tickets, he said.

“It's another way of promoting community,” White said.
