BETHEL PARK — Seneca Valley needed a reversal in momentum.

The Raiders found it — but not easily.

In a game that featured seven lead changes and a 36-36 deadlock through three quarters, Seneca Valley put together a strong fourth period to come away with a 48-42 girls basketball victory over City League power Westinghouse Saturday at Bethel Park's Joey Fabus Memorial Classic.

“We knew they'd be physical and we knew we had to match that physicality,” Seneca Valley coach Dorothea Epps said.

The Raiders (11-6) were coming off consecutive section losses to North Allegheny and Norwin by margins of 34 and 29 points, the latter game on the road Friday night.

“This was a tough turnaround for us, but I think the girls recognized how important it was to come out and play hard,” Epps said.

The Raiders took an 11-2 lead in the first four-plus minutes, using a pair of treys by Jaden Davinsizer to grab the early advantage. But Westinghouse (11-4) quickly fought back, using a 12-2 run to turn a 15-6 deficit into an 18-17 lead late in the second quarter.

The game was a dogfight from there. Both teams had a lot of turnovers in what turned into a physical, defensive scrum at times.

“We started strong, but they fought back,” sophomore guard Olivia West said. “This was a battle. We needed to stand up to them and we did.”

A layup by Janiya Beasley gave the Bulldogs their last lead at 38-36 seconds into the fourth quarter. A layup by West, treys by Davinsizer and Haley Cramer, followed by a Davinsizer layup, gave SV a 47-40 lead with 2:50 to play.

Westinghouse did not threaten from there.

“Too many turnovers,” Bulldogs coach Phyllis Jones said. “That's not our game. We gave the ball back too many times.”

Westinghouse reached the City League title game 27 successive years through 2013. Since then, the Bulldogs have been in the championship game three times.

Westinghouse is in second place behind Allderdce in the current City League standings. The Bulldogs had won seven of their last eight games entering Saturday

“We'll see them (Allderdice) again in the playoffs,” Jones said. “They've already beaten us twice and it's hard to beat a team three times in one year.

“This was a good game for us. Seneca Valley plays hard and they're disciplined. We got a lot out of this game.”

West had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Raiders. Davinsizer scored 17 points, including four treys. Cramer contributed nine points, Jess Bickart six assists.

Makita Logan paced Westinghouse with 13 points. Dajanae Glover had nine points and eight rebounds, point guard Ladayja Floyd six steals and five assists.

“That girl (Floyd) is very quick,” Epps said. “They gave us a lot of problems. That is a very athletic team.”

Seneca Valley had 19 turnovers, Westinghouse 20. The Raiders had a 31-22 edge in rebounding.

“Physical teams like them always go at the boards hard,” West said. “Winning the rebound battle was a big part of winning this game.”

The Joey Fabus Memorial Classic featured five girls varsity games Saturday. Fabus is a former Bethel Park student who died at a young age from a form of brain cancer. All proceeds from Saturday's games benefit the Joey Fabus Childhood Cancer Foundation.
