Why can't we accept results of elections?

I recently read the op-ed piece “Should Obama have been Impeached,” by one Jay Ambrose from the Tribune New Service.

My reaction? Oh brother!

Is our country’s political landscape so warped that some now want to retroactively impeach a president? Okay, if that is how Mr. Ambrose feels, then let’s go back in time and impeach:

George W. Bush for getting us into the Iraq War under false pretenses. The justification for that war was that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and was somehow involved in 9/11. Neither was true. Thousands of lives lost and trillions of dollars spent.

Ronald Reagan for Iran-Contra. Selling weapons to Iran (who supported terrorism) to support the Contras in Nicaragua which went against the law.

President Lyndon Johnson for escalating the Vietnam War with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Many now believe the Gulf of Tonkin incident never happened. So the war (not declared by Congress) was fought because of this lie and many others.

I could go on. But do you see the ridiculousness of this exercise?

The reason President Trump is being impeached is because he is a terrible person. He lies, cozies up with dictators, offends our allies, and mocks the FBI, women, war heroes and dead congressmen. If he was a decent person, perhaps none of this would have happened. But here we are.

In 1993, I was traveling north in Virginia and passed a car that had an “Impeach Clinton” bumper sticker on it. He had barely been in office six months! Fast forward to the summer of 2009, and it was an “Impeach Obama” bumper sticker on another car. He also had been in office only six months.

The problem with this nation is the fact that we live in an age when many people cannot or will not accept the results of our elections.

If this trend continues, it’s not impeachment we should fear, but the future of our republic.
