YOUNGSTOWN — Moniteau graduate James Parenti, a freshman on the Grove City College track and field team, set the program record in the weight throw at the Youngstown State College Invitational.

Parenti's record-distance was 43 feet, 4.5 inches. He placed 30th overall, second among Division III competitors.

[naviga:h3]SR's Brown snares wins at Meadows[/naviga:h3]

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Slippery Rock resident Brady Brown drove two more horses to victory Monday in harness racing action at The Meadows.

Brown drove Stranger Things — trained by Steve Schoeffel of Evans City — to victory in a $12,000 Conditioned Pace and Lifeisbutadream to a win in a $7,700 Conditioned Claiming Pace.

Aaron Johnston of Evans City drove Cracker Box to a win in an $11,000 Conditioned Trot.

[naviga:h3]Karenbauer's relay breaks pool record[/naviga:h3]

BRADFORD — Knoch graduate Matt Karenbauer teamed with three other Penn State Behrend swimmers to set a pool record in the 200 medley relay Monday.

The quartet swam the event in 1 minute, 40.23 seconds to establish the record in that event for Pitt-Bradford's Duke III Aquatic Center. Behrend won the dual meet, 117-47.

Karenbauer also won the 200 individual medley in 2:06.92.

Baylor and Gonzaga were the only two teams in the top five that took care of business last week.

That doesn’t mean they didn’t move around, too.

The Bears (15-1) leaped over the Bulldogs and into the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll on Monday, using wins over Iowa State and Oklahoma State.

[naviga:h3]Braves, Hernandez agree on contract[/naviga:h3]

ATLANTA — Longtime Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez reached a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves on Monday that includes an invite to big league spring training.

The right-hander would get a $1 million, one-year contract if added to Atlanta’s 40-man roster.

Hernandez, who turns 34 in April, is coming off his worst season in the majors. King Felix went 1-8 with a 6.40 ERA in 15 starts for the Mariners and lost his place in the rotation.
