Mars, Knoch reunited in WPIAL football

Both teams will be class 1A; Freeport, NC in same section

WPIAL member schools voted to keep its football alignment “status quo” for the next two years.

That means minor changes for Butler County teams in the district, the biggest being Mars and Knoch returning to the same section.

Both teams will be in Section 2-4A, joining Armstrong, Greensburg Salem, Hampton, Highlands, Indiana and Plum.

Knoch and Mars last played each other in 2017.

“It's like the old days, back to the GAC (Greater Allegheny Conference),” Mars coach Scott Heinauer said. “We played all of those teams before in conference and we're pretty familiar with the programs, except for Plum.

“We've scrimmaged (Knoch) the last couple of years, but actually playing them in a game, it's good for the schools and both communities. It's great to be back where we were.”

Seneca Valley remains in Class 6A, which loses Pine-Richland and Butler, yet picks up Baldwin.

Butler recently declined a WPIAL football schedule and became an associate member of the sport in District 10.

North Catholic and Freeport remain in the same section (2-3A) with Burrell, Deer Lakes, Derry, East Allegheny and Valley.

Summit Academy will play in Section 1-2A with Apollo-Ridge, Ligonier Valley, Serra Catholic, Shady Side Academy and Steel Valley.
