Tornado swimmers felled by NA

BUTLER TWP — North Allegheny's swimming and diving opponents are used to coming up short against the Tigers on the scoreboard, but not every team produces the number of positives in defeat that Butler had Wednesday night.

NA defeated Butler's girls 118-68 while the Golden Tornado boys fell 100-76.

The Tigers have won 12 of the last 14 WPIAL team titles on the boys side and the girls have claimed 11 straight crowns.

Butler's boys took first place in eight of 12 events Wednesday and the girls did so in six events.

“NA's depth hurt us tonight, but I thought our top swimmers did very well,” said Butler coach Dave Bocci. “Our state qualifiers swam like state qualifiers.”

That included junior David Bocci, who won the 100-yard butterfly (52.42) and 500 freestyle (4:58.06).

Through his first two years of varsity swimming, David Bocci swam the 500 and 200 individual medley, making the state meet in both.

But he has traded in the IM for the butterfly.

“I swam the 200 fly while I was on a trip to Cleveland State last offseason,” he said. “I did pretty well and it has taken off from there.

“I kept working on it and have made a lot of progress.”

Coach Bocci, David's father, sees no reason why he can't do well in the butterfly when the district meet rolls around next month.

“He's getting better every meet,” he said. “A 52 in this pool, at this time of the year, that's really good.”

Though he's still relatively new to the event, Bocci is setting his sights high.

“My best time so far is 51 (seconds),” he said. “The school record is (50.83 by Josh Barthlow) and I want to break it this season.

“The key is going to be getting a lot of time in the weight room to get the core work in,” he said.

David Bocci was also on the winning 200 medley relay foursome along with Sam Deemer, Gideon Goettler and Ben Borvendeg.

Coach Bocci was impressed with his girls 200 medley relay squad, which won with a time of 1:51.48. The quartet included Abbie Griffith, Laura Goettler, Ellie Weiss and Savannah Holt.

“That was a big swim tonight,” he said. “The school record is 1:50.”

Griffith (butterfly, backstroke) and Goettler (200 IM, breaststroke) both added two individual wins.

Sidney Duffy won the diving event for Butler with a score of 206.15.

The Tornado boys (3-1) and girls (2-2) will both be in action Friday at home against Moon.
