SRU's Rivers earns Maxwell Award

PHILADELPHIA — Slippery Rock University quarterback Roland Rivers II is receiving the 2019 Maxwell Football Club’s Brian Westbrook Regional Player of the Year.

Rivers will receive the award March 6 at the Maxwell Football Club’s Annual Gala at the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City. He will be honored with LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Ohio State defernsive end Chase Young, LSU coach Ed Orgeron and the still-to-be-named NFL Player and Coach of the Year.

“What a tremendous honor for Roland and our program,” SRU football coach Shawn Lutz said in a prepared statement. “He won the Division II Player of the Year Award and now he gets to be recognized on the same stage with the Division I Player of the Year and some of the top names in football in this country.

“Just think, between Joe Burrow and Roland sitting on that stage, they combined for 125 touchdowns this year. That’s incredible.”

The Brian Westbrook Award — named after the former Philadelphia Eagles running back — recognizes the top collegiate player in the region, regardless of the level of competition.

Last year’s winner was Princeton quarterback John Lovett. Other former winners include Penn State quarterback Chase McSorlery and Rutgers receivers Mohamed Sanu and Kenny Britt. Rivers becomes the first western Pa. football player to win the award.

Rivers set the Division II single-season record of 370 points responsible for and tied the record of 61 touchdowns responsible for. He shattered SRU single-season records with 322 completions, 4.460 passing yards, 52 touchdown passes and 5,160 yards of total offense.

He was 23-3 overall, 14-0 in PSAC West play, in his two years as The Rock’s starting quarterback.

Rivers is currently training with an NFL quarterbacks coach in San Diego and is scheduled to play in the Hula Bowl at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in Hawaii.
