If you're going to drive, don't drink

A Butler County man is suing a Pittsburgh strip club, claiming its bartenders served him too much to drink, allowing him to end up in a DUI crash that caused serious injury.

The plaintiff claims the club continued to serve him and his friends alcohol even though they were “visibly intoxicated.”

The suit alleges the club violated the state’s Dram Shop Act, which is aimed at an establishment’s role in maintaining public safety against intoxicated patrons.

The law prohibits an employee or “agent” of an establishment from serving alcohol to someone who is visibly intoxicated.

We are not questioning the need for such laws.

Evidence shows dram shop laws are effective in reducing alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities nationwide among adult and underage drinkers. Thirty states have such laws.

According to the latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics, drunken drivers were involved in 10,874 traffic fatalities during 2017. That’s nearly one-third of all fatal crashes recorded that year.

The lawsuit against the strip club has some merit.

We agree that an establishment shouldn’t continue to pour drinks for a patron who is visibly intoxicated.

But when did it become someone else’s responsibility to look after our actions?

Drug and alcohol abuse is a problem in our society, but blaming someone for your getting drunk and then operating a motor vehicle seems a bit far-fetched.

The onus here is on the drinker. If you can’t control your alcohol intake, turn your keys over to a sober friend or designated driver, drink at home — or better yet, get professional help for your addiction.

Think twice before taking the wheel of a two-ton vehicle and hurtling it down the highway where you can seriously harm yourself or others.

Be responsible.
