Knoch still rolling

Knoch #20 Ryan Lang grabs the rebound from Freeport #25 Parker Lucas during a game at Freeport Gym on Tuesday January 14, 2020
Knights pile up 83 points in win over Freeport

BUFFALO TWP — Scoring 83 points in a game may sound like a lot for a high school basketball team, but not for Knoch's boys team, which has put up at least 85 three times this season.

The numbers Knights' coach Ron McNabb is more concerned with are 5-0, which is his team's Section 1-4A record after an 83-59 win at Freeport Tuesday night.

“We are thrilled with where we are at,” McNabb said. “It's hard to win games in the WPIAL and we just want to keep it going as long as we can.”

The veteran coach considered his team's performance in the first half to be subpar. The Knights missed their first eight shot attempts in the second period and entered halftime with a 29-24 lead.

Knoch's onslaught began in the third period, when senior forward Brady McKee scored 10 points — all in the paint — in the first four minutes, five seconds of the third quarter.

That effort was part of a 24-11 run that the Yellowjackets never recovered from.

“We made a concerted effort to get the ball inside to Brady and he showed some good finishing moves,” said McNabb. “We have four guys averaging double figures in points (Scott Fraser, Jared Schrecengost, Jake Scheidt and Ryan Lang) and Brady could very well be averaging that. Teams have to pick their poison against us.”

Freeport was unable to withstand Knoch's flurry of points, which included 27 in both the third and fourth periods.

“We played well in the first half and told our guys that the first four minutes of the second half would be big,” said Freeport coach Wayne Greiser. “Unfortunately, it didn't go our way.

“They built a big lead and we started scrambling, trying to do some things. They have five guys who can shoot and that makes it tough to guard them.”

Already leading 56-39 after three quarters, Knoch received a trey from Schrecengost, Scheidt and Lang, and Fraser capped his 27-point night with 12 points in the fourth quarter to dash any hopes of a Freeport comeback.

Lang scored 16 points, including four treys, in the victory and Scheidt added 12.

Vinnie Clark led Freeport with 18 and Aiden Skradski tallied 11.

Knoch (11-1 overall) plays Burrell in a non-section game Saturday before beginning the second half of its section slate at Mount Pleasant next Tuesday.

“Things are working now exactly the way we expected,” said Fraser. “We all worked hard in the summer for this and we have even more confidence than before.”

The 'Jackets (3-8, 1-4) sit a game behind Derry for the final playoff spot from the section, having already lost to the Trojans last month. The rematch is scheduled Tuesday at Freeport.

“It's a must-win for us,” said Greiser.
