Elizabeth Salgado

JACKSON TWP — Elizabeth Salgado, a junior Seneca Valley High School flautist, took first place in the Senior Woodwinds Division in the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Competition.

She won the state round three years ago in the junior division.

Salgado previously made it to the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) state level bands as a sophomore. This year, she was the top-scoring musician at Honors Band and will be going on to the journey to the state level once again.

The MTNA National Student Competitions are the most successful and prestigious student competitions in the country. Each year, thousands of students compete for top prizes and national recognition.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Rebecca DeGraaf, a senior music therapy major from Cranberry Township at Slippery Rock University, was part of the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh's “Music Maker” sessions. The program, introduced in the fall, seeks to enrich the lives of children, and provide developmental support for them through music.The initiative is part of SRU's Early Childhood and Elementary Music Community Engagement program being led by Cassandra Eisenreich, SRU assistant professor of music. The purpose of the program is to provide free music experiences for the community and, in the process, help children develop essential motor skills, positive character traits, and an appreciation for music through musical play.
