Gov., Sen. urge residents to sign up for health care

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., joined Gov. Tom Wolf and Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman in a news conference Friday in Pittsburgh to urge Pennsylvanians to sign up for health care at HealthCare.gov before Sunday's enrollment deadline.

According to Natalie Adams, press secretary for Casey, final numbers for the 2020 plan enrollment will be tabulated after the period closes.

“So far, 142,159 people have enrolled in Pennsylvania for 2020 plans. However, we know that most people sign up/renew in the last few days,” said Adams, noting at this same time last year, 163,457 people had signed up for coverage.

For 2019 plans, 365,888 Pennsylvanians enrolled. In terms of eligibility, according to Adams, all Americans are eligible to shop for health insurance on the marketplace. Many qualify for tax credits, which help with the cost of coverage.

“As we near the conclusion of this year's open enrollment period for plans through the Affordable Care Act, I encourage you to enroll, because I want all Pennsylvanians to be healthy,” Wolf said. “If you or family members need health insurance, if you want to make modifications to your current plan through HealthCare.gov, or if you want to price shop insurance plans, now is the time.”

Casey also used the news conference to focus on what he sees as a threat to the ACA.

A report the senator's office released in October said while legislative avenues to repeal the Affordable Care Act are all but closed, the Trump administration continues to sabotage the health insurance coverage.

Casey's report describes the findings of an investigation by his office into how the administration's sabotage is affecting consumers shopping online for health insurance.

Another report from Casey's office released in November accused the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress of trying to destroy the ACA through court challenges, dismantling the law through administrative sabotage and using harmful budget cuts to defund health care.
