BC3 students share their letters

The holiday season means different things to different people. For young children, it's the countdown to Christmas and writing letters to Santa.

For Butler County Community students, December brings with it finals week and the end of the semester.

But what if it also brought student letters to the jolly old elf? BC3 students were asked to take time out from studying for their upcoming finals and share what they might include in their letters to Santa.

College was uppermost in the gift thoughts of Tyler Bell, 21, of Butler, a criminology and cybersecurity major.Asked what he would ask Santa for, he answered quickly, “Tuition remission. And there's textbooks, things that make it easier to got to school. Gas money.“Probably I would like some opportunities to hang out with my friends over the holidays,” said Bell. “It's coming up upon finals. That's an intense week. But it's part of going to school. It's always intense but you have to push through it.“And I'd like to have time to spend with my family. That's important, too,” he added.

Christina Canami, 21, a medical assistant major from New Castle, cut to the gift-receiving chase. She said, in writing Santa, “I would say I want a million dollars. I could do a lot with a million.”“I have everything else; my mom, my dad, my grandparent,” said Canami. “Of course, I would want to travel.”

Tiffany Horstman, 21, of Butler, an accounting major at Clarion University taking a degree completion program at BC3, had a practical request for Santa and a practical reason for the request.Horstman said, “I would probably ask for more clothes. I just like to wear a bunch of different things.“I just like wearing clothing I don't have to pay for. Clothes are expensive,” she said.Horstman added, “I'd like to get Amazon gift cards to order books for school. They are not cheap.”

Years ago, gifts of socks and underwear would be considered a disappointment to a child. Now they are at the top of the wish list for some.Ashton Gallagher, a 19-year-old criminology major from Cabot, also had practicality and perhaps the recent snowy weather on his mind.He said, “I'm definitely going to want some more socks and boxers. They're quick to run out.“I'd like to have a heated bedsheet, maybe a nice fluffy set of blankets and comforters,” said Gallagher. “And lots of food. A nice jacket to keep me warm, some pants. Some Hawaiian shirts, they are awesome.”

Cassidy Sutter, 18, a general studies major from Mars has also put away childish things.Sutter said, “I feel like an adult. I'd ask for candles, clothes and gift cards to Chipolte. That's my favorite restaurant. I spend a lot of money at Chipolte.”

In addition to clothes and Vans shoes, Jake Broman, 19, a business major from Saxonburg, wants a nitrous kit for his car.He said, “I take my car to the Pittsburgh International Raceway in Beaver. Nitrous oxide is a way to pump more oxygen for more efficient combustion.”

Brandon Zappi, 19, a general studies major from Cabot, said he'd like “a new laptop, probably new shoes, and I say maybe new clothes, some more clothes, maybe a watch.”Visions of gifts under the tree would have to wait until the end of the week, Zappi added.“I've got more studying to do,” he said.

Faith Bajema, 18, a communications major from Butler, wants experiences more than things.“Musical tickets to anything,” she said when asked what she would put on her list to Santa.“I would love to see 'Newsies' again or 'Legally Blonde,'” she said. She would like to have some time, too, to get together with friends who are home for the holidays.“I had a few asking to get together around Thanksgiving,” Bajema said, “but I worked all through Thanksgiving, even on Thanksgiving Day.”
