No toxic culture at South Butler

On Friday, Nov. 15, the editorial by NCD suggested that the name change at South Butler is a good idea because it will “overcome what had become a toxic culture in the district.”

With all due respect to NCD, in my opinion South Butler has never had and hopefully never will have a toxic culture.

I have the honor and privilege to serve as a school director for the district. What I see is a district full of great students with a top-notch teaching staff.

Our academic record speaks for itself.

Over the last several years the district has won a couple of different state championships in sports. The musicals receive recognition almost every year with students traveling to New York city to represent us. This year, the addition of Rachel’s Challenge has helped take our school environment to a new level of kindness.

Now there are absolutely some toxic relationships that need to be worked on. But I think it is completely unfair to label an entire district as toxic over a couple of toxic relationships.

My wife and I moved back here over 20 years ago to raise our family. We don’t regret moving to the South Butler School District at all. If I had to make the same decision today as back then I would make the same exact choice.

George J. Zacherl,

school director, South Butler Area Schools
