Sam Doctor announces second run for 11th district seat
The state House district most central to Butler will be contested again in 2020.
Sam Doctor, the Democrat defeated by Republican Marci Mustello in May's special election for the 11th district seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, told the Eagle via text message that he is running for the seat again in 2020.
Doctor held a kick-off event with friends and supporters at Butler Brew Works Thursday night, then publicly announced his intention online Friday. Aside from his online announcement, he hasn't provided any other comments on his bid for the seat.
“I humbly ask for your support, but also remind you that it is incumbent on us to do the work,” Doctor wrote on his campaign Facebook page. “It's our responsibility, as regular people, to rekindle the civil friendship and spirit of cooperation which will always be the foundation of the American ideal.”
Doctor is a 28-year-old crane operator at AK Steel and an active UAW 3303 member.
Mustello won the seat in May with 57.3 percent of the vote, compared to Doctor's 42.4 percent, according to Butler County election archives.
A notable ballot error affected the race in May: Ballots did not list the political affiliation of the two candidates. Neither candidate filed a complaint over the error, so the results were certified regardless.
The 11th district seat was previously held by Brian Ellis before he resigned earlier this year.
Mustello confirmed Friday that she's going to run for reelection.
