Tasting opens ceramic arts exhibit

Ceramic artist and art educator Mary Anne Andreassi, left, and exhibit director Christy Culp, will take part in The Art of the Drink exhibit through Nov. 29 at the Butler Art Center.

The Art of the Drink will have a tasting reception Friday featuring food and beverages from Butler County businesses.

The reception is planned for 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Butler Art Center, 344 S. Main St.

Providing beverage tastings will be Cellar Works Brewing in Sarver and Missing Link Brewery in Renfrew, and food will be from Batch in Saxonburg.

“Mocktails” will be made by Art Center board members Nicole Thurner and Christy Culp.

A $10 admission at the door benefits the Clay Studio at the Art Center.

Handmade Souvenir Sampling Cups will be available for a $15 donation.

The exhibit itself features the work of 57 artists and 19 ceramic artists from around the U.S.

The show, dedicated to the ceramic arts, has all handmade pieces focusing on the storing, pouring and drinking beverages.

Displayed are more than 100 pieces, including teapots, drink tumblers, jugs, whiskey sippers, sangria pitchers, pouring bottles and flight sets.

Culp, local potter and director of the show, said: “Pottery is the most intimate of art forms. Not only has the artist created something visually interesting and beautiful, they have designed it to be held in your hands and experienced.”

The exhibit showcases the diverse approaches to working with clay, the different forms, and the many ways ceramic artists decorate and glaze each piece, according to Culp.
