Holly Roy of East Butler, a Butler Area High School graduate, was awarded a first-year scholarship by Youngstown State University.

The music education violin major received the Trailblazer Scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship for freshmen that aims to encourage outstanding students from diverse backgrounds, and the MLK Merit Award, a $1,000 merit-based award for new high school graduates of local inner-city schools.

Youngstown State University awarded Scholarships for Excellence to more than 1,000 students this fall. Local awardees include:

Austin Romanchak of Freeport was awarded a Trustees’ Scholarship.

Samantha Runyan of Rimersburg was awarded a Trustees’ Scholarship.

Kaylee Rodgers of Butler was awarded a Red and White Scholarship.

Joseph Atkinson of Butler was awarded a President’s Scholarship.

Nearly 300 first-year students at Youngstown State University were awarded Honors, Provost and Housing scholarships this fall. Local recipients include:

Aquinas Academy senior Samuel Schirra of Butler County received the AP Scholar Award for his success on AP exams.

AP Scholar designation is “granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams” according to College Board.

Brooke Schaefers of Butler was named a Student of the Week for Fall 2019 by The Honors College at Youngstown State University.

Schaefers spent four weeks in Tanzania, Africa, this summer teaching a men’s intermediate class on English, helping them perfect their grammar. She also worked on construction projects in the afternoons, such as eco-blocks and permaculture gardens. She also climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Drew Kolek of Freeport will be part of the University of Mount Union’s performance “Prospero’s Magic Island” from Thursday to Sunday at the Giese Performing Arts Center Brush Performance Hall.

Kolek’s role is Ariel, a sprites, or creatures of the island, in the production.

“Prospero’s Magic Island” is an interpretation of “The Tempest” by the legendary William Shakespeare. The 55-minute show is family-friendly and includes elements of magic and music throughout the production.

Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available online at mountunion.edu/boxoffice, over the phone at 330-821-2565 or in person at the box office, Monday through Friday, 2 to 4:30 p.m. and one hour before the show.
