Senior centers gather for countywide festival

Nearly 235 seniors from Butler County's senior citizen centers gathered at YMCA Camp Kon-o-Kwee for the senior fall festiva Oct. 30.

FOMBELL — Line dancing called 91-year-old Jean Hickey to the dance floor.

“It gets everyone together from the different centers,” said Hickey of Butler, who attends the Butler Senior Center at Tanglewood.

More than 230 seniors from area senior centers, including, Slippery Rock, Chicora, Butler, Mars, Cranberry Township and Mount Chestnut, celebrated the fall season during the Harvest Gathering Wednesday at Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer, 126 Nagel Road.

Socializing is one aspect Dorothy Fine, 94, liked about the gathering.“It's a nice day out,” said Fine of West Sunbury, who attends the Butler Senior Center at Tanglewood.Twice a year, the seniors usually travel to the location for fun, she said.Activities included train rides, donut decorating, square dancing, word searches, crafts and coloring, bingo and cornhole playing.

Each center also participated in a scarecrow-decorating contest.The gathering has been held off and on for the past 20 years, said Pam Malachin, Butler County Senior Center regional manager.“It brings the seniors all together in one place,” Malachin said.
