Pittsburgh Pirates president leaving team

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Wednesday that the team and its president, Frank Coonelly, are parting ways.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Wednesday that the team and its president, Frank Coonelly, are parting ways.

Coonelly's replacement has been selected and will be introduced on Monday.

Coonelly said he knew that “change was necessary” following a “disappointing” second half of the season, noting that “results matter, and our results simply were not acceptable.”

“As we worked through a comprehensive assessment of everything that we do, I undertook an honest self-evaluation,” Coonelly said. “While not an easy conclusion to reach, I ultimately decided that the best interests of the Pirates would be served if the club had a new leader who would bring new ideas and a new direction.”

Bob Nutting, chairman of the board for the Pirates, said a leadership transition would provide an opportunity to “refresh our entire operations.” He said the team will continue to work to find a new field manager and build its coaching staff.

“I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for Frank,” Nutting said of Coonelly. “I will forever be grateful for his tireless work ethic on behalf of the organization as well as his and his family's commitment to making a positive impact in our community.”

The Pirates finished 69-93 and in last place this season in the National League Central Division. The team fired manager Clint Hurdle in September after the Pirates fell to the bottom of the league.
