Passing lane restrictions coming to Interstate 79 bridge in Lancaster Township

LANCASTER TWP — Motorists traveling on the Interstate 79 northbound bridge, which runs over East Lancaster Road, can expect restrictions of the passing lane over the bridge's entirety, according to state officials.

On Oct. 4., an over-height vehicle struck the bridge, located near mile marker 91, causing damage.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in District 10 said in a news release it is developing emergency plans to temporarily support the bridge, which would allow the lane restrictions to be lifted until a permanent repair is completed.

As an alternative route to avoid the I-79 northbound bridge, PennDOT suggests motorists can take Exit 88 to Route 19 north to Route 488.

A map of this suggested alternative route is available online.

PennDOT will announce the dates of closure for East Lancaster Road once repair work is scheduled. To detour, motorists can take East Lancaster Road to Route 19 south, then turn left onto Little Creek Road and then turn left to remain Yellow Creek Road, back to East Lancaster Road. Two detour maps (Map 1 and Map 2) are available online.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 950 traffic cameras.
