Singer, sporting goods charity donate to SRHS

A group of female student athletes, two of whom are from Slippery Rock High School, work out before being surprised Carrie Underwood with a donation.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock High School has received a donation from Carrie Underwood and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Before her concert Saturday at PPG Paints Arena, Underwood surprised a group of girls participating in a health workout class inside the arena. The workout was led by Underwood's personal trainer, Eve Overland.

As part of the surprise, Underwood presented the athletes with a ceremonial check for $100,000 from the Sports Matter campaign from The Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation.

Slippery Rock High School along with four other schools will split the donation five ways for $20,000 each. The other schools are Armstrong, Burrell, Fort Cherry and Riverside.

According to a news release, the money goes toward the sports programs of the girls who were present.

Daniel Follett, the district's athletic director, said the money provides extra income that could be used to finance or buy items that they may have put off due to budget constraints.

“It could be anything associated with that. It could be female facility improvements, uniforms, jerseys,” Follett said. “It could help start a new club or activity.”

Follett said the spending of the donation will be based on priority.

“I have a list of things,” he said. “We're always looking to improve across the board in everything.”

As an added bonus, the girls also received concert tickets to Underwood's show. She performed at PPG Paints Arena as one stop in her Cry Pretty Tour 360.

Follett said both of Slippery Rock's representatives, sophomore basketball players Bronwyn McCoy and Katie Book, knew they were attending an event organized by Underwood and Dick's, but they were not told about the check presentation because it was meant to be a surprise.

“It was exciting, and they were very thrilled and had lots of pictures taken,” Follett said.”

Superintendent Alfonso Angelucci said he and the administration are proud of their female athletic programs. He said from coaches to parents to students, everyone contributes to their participation, leadership and success.

“To see that rewarded from Dick's Sporting Goods in cooperation with Carrie Underwood is just unbelievable, and we feel very fortunate,” Angelucci said.

In 2014, Dick's and The Dick's Foundation launched the Sports Matter program to raise funds and awareness for the youth sports funding crisis.

Together they have pledged more than $110 million to support teams and raise awareness for this issue and impacted more than 1 million young athletes across all 50 states.
