GET PREPARED

2 flood-disaster workshops slated

Two flood-disaster workshops in the coming weeks are designed to help residents be better prepared for flooding.

Both workshops will run from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and Nov. 2 at the Butler City Fire Station, 110 N. Washington St.

Flash flooding has been a major issue this year following rainstorms in Butler County — especially in the city of Butler, Connoquenessing, Connoquenessing Township, Forward Township, Zelienople, Harmony, Evans City, and Jackson and Lancaster townships.

The workshops will be broken down into three segments: before the flood, during the flood and after the flood.

The first segment will be led by the Butler City emergency management coordinator and a Butler County director of emergency services representative.

A city engineer will discuss why flooding has occurred and what the city is doing to remedy the problem. It will also inform attendees on how to get advanced warnings through the county's CODE RED program, and a flood insurance agent will discuss what flood insurance covers.

The second segment will be led by PA Volunteers Inc., the shelter management team for the county. Discussion will revolve around flood safety inside and outside the home, and PA Volunteers Inc.'s director of sheltering will talk about what people need to know about moving to a shelter during a flood emergency — for example, what to bring and what to expect.

The third segment will include discussion by a flood insurance representative on how to file a claim for flood damage, and local human service agencies will talk about how residents can get help after a flood. There will also be discussion on how to know when it's safe to go into a home or building after a flood. as well as how to clean up. An “After the Disaster” booklet from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency will be handed out.
