E-sports a go at South Butler

JEFFERSON TWP — Knoch High School will have an esports team in April.

The South Butler County School District on Wednesday night approved adding an esports team to the clubs and activities at the high school.

Students will practice video gaming at upgraded computers at specific times, then compete with other schools within the state. Winners will then move on to national competition.

The district will pay each student's $65 participation fee, but students must pay the drug testing and activity fees.

Superintendent David Foley said last week that an informal poll showed about 43 students would be interested in an esports team.

Donna Eakin, school board president, said the team would give nonathletic students a chance to excel.

Foley pointed out that many colleges and universities are now offering esports scholarships.
