Maestro makes debut with Philharmonic

Daniel Nesta Curtis makes his debut as maestro of the Pittsburgh Philharmonic during the “Resound, Renew and Reclaim” concert Oct. 27 at the Succop Theater on the Butler County Community College campus.
Performance scheduled on Oct. 27 at BC3

Daniel Nesta Curtis will perform his debut as maestro of the Pittsburgh Philharmonic Oct. 27 at Butler County Community College.

The 33-year-old will direct more than 70 musicians for the 95-minute “Resound, Renew and Reclaim” performance starting at 3 p.m.

Curtis auditioned for music director of the Pittsburgh Philharmonic at the Succop Theater in March, one of two finalists for the job, and in July was selected to replace Edward Leonard, who served as the symphony orchestra's music conductor for 11 seasons, according to a news release from the college.

Curtis is a faculty member of the school of music at Carnegie Mellon University, where in 2012 he received a master's degree in instrumental conducting.

The Pittsburgh resident is a former bassoonist who will play piano and accompany violinist Kathleen Andrews, concert master of the philharmonic, during the short spiritual “Deep River.”

The concert will also feature Mozart's “Overture to The Magic Flute,” Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's “Petite Suite de Concert,” “Deep River,” composed by Harry Burleigh and arranged by Coleridge-Taylor, and Antonin Dvorak's “Symphony No. 9, from the New World.”

The Oct. 27 concert is the first of four during the Philharmonic's season.

Tickets cost $15 for general admission, $13 for senior citizens and $10 for students, and are available at bc3.edu/theater, by calling 724-284-8505, or at the box office the day of the concert.
