Black helicopters to fly low in county

Residents should not be concerned about the helicopters they might see flying low in the county this week.

Ike Kelly, manager of the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport, said Monday that a company will check gas and electric lines this week throughout the county in black helicopters.

He said helicopters carrying workers who are checking gas lines thought to have a possible leak could hover just 100 feet above the ground, barely above treetop level.

“If you have a power line or gas line close to your property, you might see them,” Kelly said.

He said the choppers might also be cutting branches from around power lines, which requires them to fly lower than normal.

Kelly said he receives calls from concerned citizens every time the helicopter inspections are carried out.
