Social media helps couple severely injured in crash

Social media can be a powerful, positive force.

Consider Jenny and Zach Martin, a Butler County couple severely injured earlier this month when their vehicle was T-boned by a driver who admitted using opioids before the crash on Route 8.

A GoFundMe account set up to help offset the couple’s medical bills has raised $23,500 through 272 donations as of late Thursday.

“We are blown away by the amazing support of everyone who is stepping up to help Jenny and Zach,” Holly Taylor Mead, the account’s organizer and Jenny’s sister said.

“They both thought they were going to die.”

The Martins face mounting medical bills and will be off work and focusing on recovery for the next several months.

They have been moved out of ICU to the trauma unit and are in the same Pittsburgh hospital room.

Mead said her sister’s ribs are broken in so many places that doctors stopped counting at 10 breaks.

We often hear of the bad aspects of social media, among them being you are more likely to report poor mental health, including symptoms of anxiety and depression for spending too much time on it.

Social media also is blamed for bullying and other personal attacks.

On Thursday a former Knoch High School student who caused a scare at the school earlier this year was sentenced to time served after pleading no contest in July to terroristic threats after a Snapchat video surfaced depicting him firing a gun with the caption “Training for Prom Walk” scrawled over the video.

A judge ordered him to stay off all social media platforms during his government supervision.

GoFundMe is the biggest crowdfunding platform, responsible for raising over $5 billion since its debut in 2010. GoFundMe receives over $140 million in donations per month.

And, sure, some people use GoFundMe for selfish reasons, such as trying to raise money for a new car.

But as the Martins’ story shows, many among us are willing to help a stranger in need.

That says a lot about human nature.
