Masons celebrate centennial in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, Lawrence County — The Valley of New Castle Thirty-Second Degree Masons will celebrate its 100th year on Saturday.

The Valley of New Castle was established on April 1919. The New Castle Consistory, the large and ornate Scottish Rite Cathedral on East Lincoln Avenue, was built in 1925 and first used in November 1926.

The Valley of New Castle lodge met elsewhere in New Castle before the consistory was built.

Don Paul of Butler, who has belonged to the Valley of New Castle since 2004, said Sovereign Grand Commander David A. Glattly will travel from Massachusetts to attend a dinner on Saturday at the consistory. Other Masonic dignitaries also are expected to attend the dinner, Paul said.

He said the centennial celebration was not held in April because it was planned around Glattly's schedule.

“He's like the president of the United States for the Masons,” Paul said.

Paul said many of the 16 Masonic Valleys in Pennsylvania were established just after the turn of the century, when Masonry was introduced in the United States and became a popular service organization.

“So, they're all getting close,” Paul said of potential centennials in other valleys.

The Valley of New Castle covers 10 counties in Western Pennsylvania, including Butler.

Bill McCarrier, former Butler County commissioner, also is a member of the Valley of New Castle.

There are no public events associated with the centennial celebration on Saturday.
