SV student organizes Walk for Hunger

Last year's first A Walk for Hunger event recorded a fundraising total of $4,500. This year's walk will take place Sunday at North Boundary Park in Cranberry Township.
Events raise awareness of food insecurity

CRANBERRY TWP — Food insecurity takes many forms — for children, neighbors, loved ones.

“I learned through the project it's the people you don't realize who would have (food insecurity),” said 17-year-old Taylor Kopp.

The Seneca Valley High School senior planned A Walk for Hunger scheduled for Sunday at North Boundary Park, 1171 N. Boundary Road, Cranberry Township, as her senior project to raise awareness of food insecurity in the community and raise money for local food cupboards.

One criteria for a senior project is to raise at least $500 in 20 hours and have beneficiary confirmation, Taylor said, which is the challenge she accepted.

Ahead of the walk, Taylor has raised a total of $4,101, she said.

“It's a lot more than I anticipated,” she said.

Taylor is also the captain of the school's dance team and a National Honor Society and choir member.

The walk's proceeds will benefit the Lighthouse Foundation and the Southwest Butler Food Cupboard.

Since September is designated National Hunger Action Month, Taylor coordinated the walk with Armstrong's Avenge Hunger Month campaign.

Armstrong recently kicked off its second annual Avenge Hunger Month with a food drive which is part of its Breaking Bread initiative. This is Armstrong's second annual A Walk for Hunger, said Seth Prentice, community marketing manager for the company's Zelienople office.Last year's walk raised over $4,500, he said.Taylor has taken the time from her scholastic and extra curricular involvement to help the community, he said about her enthusiasm. In the future, Prentice said the company hopes to create a partnership with the Seneca Valley School District to continue the walk as a project for seniors to learn the importance of taking the initiative to pay a good deed forward to the community.People can walk or run for A Walk for Hunger, Taylor said. Those who register will receive a shirt and the event will also feature a basket raffle.Food cupboards are willing to help and encourage people who experience food insecurity to come forward, Taylor said.People should attend the walk to show their support and be an advocate for people experiencing food insecurity, while having a good time, she said.
