Bus stopped: Students stranded Change in Butler pickup location irritates parents

A group of Butler parents is frustrated after their children were stranded at a canceled bus stop on Thursday.

“It’s after 9 (a.m.), and there’s no bus,” said Whitney Kerry-Cousins, a parent of an elementary school student.

The children had been picked up at the spot since the beginning of the school year on Tuesday.

Parents said they weren’t told of the change.

Kerry-Cousins said last year she and other parents asked for a change to their children’s bus stop, which was on Lincoln Avenue near Eola Street and near the Center Avenue Community School.

“Our main thing is the safety of kids, and leaving at 8 in the morning and hitting all the traffic at Monroe and Center Avenue, it’s so bad there,” she said.

Kerry-Cousins said this year, the district added a stop to Monroe Street near McClain Avenue. She said she has felt much better about the new stop.

Jelitza Munoz, a parent of two elementary school students, said she was feeling much better about dropping her children off at the stop.

She said there are about four children who were using the Monroe Street stop.

But on Thursday, the bus never showed up.

“We had no idea. So, the kids missed the bus, and they had no way of getting up there to school,” Munoz said.

Munoz said she and the other parents made multiple calls to Valley Lines and were originally told there was no way their children were going to be picked up.

She said after a few hours, another bus was rerouted to make the stop at Lincoln.

Munoz said she was upset with the lack of notice as much as the change itself.

“It’s very irritating and messed up,” Munoz said. “I called (the district) as well. My husband called (the district) as well. We weren’t sure what was going on.”

When the dust settled, the parents were told by the district’s transportation department that the stop was changed for safety reasons, according to the women.

Butler Superintendent Brian White confirmed Friday that the stop was changed, but he doesn’t know how it happened.

White said children at the Monroe stop were restored to the Lincoln stop.

“We’re a little perplexed that it was changed,” White said. “We’re still trying to find out what happened.”

White said because the district did not know a change was made, it didn’t have the opportunity to notify the parents.

Despite the change of the stop, there still are lingering safety concerns proposed by the bus company, according to White.

White said the Monroe stop is on the crest of a hill, which was the concern he was told about.

“Valley (Lines) is going to review,” White said. “They have a safety officer (who) checks routes for safety.”

White said he anticipates more answers on Monday.

Kerry-Cousins said she was reminded the stop was dangerous within minutes of her children boarding the rerouted bus at the Lincoln stop.

“As soon as the kids got on the bus, two cars flew past it and didn’t even stop,” she said.

Kerry-Cousins said she filed paperwork with the district to regain the Monroe stop.

Munoz said she experienced multiple issues with transportation for her children. She said the Monroe stop was working well for the last few days, a breath of fresh air.

“We thought it was a perfect stop to begin with,” Munoz said.
