A Butler man was sentenced Thursday to a year or more in prison and 115 months of probation for sending videos of a sexual nature to a 14-year-old girl online and urging her to leave her Texas home and visit him.

Anthony Smith, 43, was sentenced to one to two years in state prison along with the probation sentence after pleading guilty in April to corruption of minors and criminal attempt of sexual abuse of children through the production of child pornography.

Smith was charged on Oct. 26 and has been detained in Butler County Prison since. Presiding Judge William Shaffer gave him 301 days credit for time already served. As part of Smith's sentence, he must register as a Tier II sex offender, a 25-year designation.

Police say Smith posed as a 15-year-old in summer 2018 during initial online communications with a minor in El Paso. Their correspondence grew to include platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram, Textnow and other social media outlets.

Trooper Bernard Novak, a member of the state police's bureau of criminal investigation, was tipped off Sept. 7 by a federal task force that the El Paso Police Department was investigating reports that Smith was communicating online with a child, according to a criminal complaint.

Smith soon shed his online persona, police said, and began asking the girl to send him explicit photos of herself.

In turn, Smith sent her nude photos of himself and a video in which he performs a sex act, according to court documents. Police said Smith also urged the girl to seek “emancipation” from her parents so they could be together, and engaged the girl in “sexualized chatting and texting.”

During Thursday's sentencing, Smith declined to make a statement. His lawyer, public defender Joseph Smith, noted that Smith had no prior criminal record.
