Ohio woman jailed after hotel scene in Cranberry Township

CRANBERRY TWP — An Ohio woman is in jail after police said she assaulted an officer as she was being arrested for not paying a hotel bill that was more than $1,000.

Kimberly Schmitt of Warren is charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; theft of services, a first-degree misdemeanor; and resisting arrest, a second-degree misdemeanor, in connection with the Aug. 16 incident.

Cranberry police said Schmitt stayed in the Residence Inn on Freedom Road from Aug. 4 to Aug. 16, charging food to her room over the course of nearly two weeks. During that time, hotel staff tried charging a credit card on file, but it was declined, according to Officer William Wilson's affidavit.

Police said they were called when the 49-year-old tried checking out and refused to pay, citing her inability to do so.

When police arrived, according to Wilson's affidavit, they told her she either had to find a way to pay or be arrested. After Schmitt contacted a friend willing to help pay, the hotel declined to accept a phone payment without an authorization form, which they said could not be completed, police said.

Wilson's affidavit says that when the hotel declined to accept the phone payment, Schmitt began walking away from officers, who told her to stop and that she was under arrest.

When Officer Rob Capezio grabbed Schmitt's arm to arrest her, Schmitt grabbed the officer's arm, digging her fingernails into his skin and causing bleeding, according to police.

Schmitt remains in jail in lieu of $50,000 bond, court documents show. Court records do not indicate if Schmitt has a lawyer.
