Lancaster supervisors praise officer for life-saving actions

LANCASTER TWP — Supervisors commended Officer Erik Magness at their monthly meeting on Monday for taking measures to save the life of a man involved in a vehicle accident on East Lancaster Road on Aug. 12.

Following the accident, in which a pickup lost control of its brakes before it hit an embankment and struck a bridge, Magness applied a tourniquet to the driver’s leg, which was heavily bleeding, Supervisor Kris Kniess said.

“Erik happened to be on scene at the time and saved the guy’s life,” he added.

Chairman Joe Plesniak added that expansion to 24-hour local police coverage has been a positive for the township, citing Magness’ duties.

“As time goes on, we’re going to see more and more lives being saved,” Plesniak said.

Lancaster Township has had round-the-clock police coverage since January 2018. Prior to that, state troopers policed the area from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

New park

Also at the meeting, supervisors voted to make a final payment to the contractor working on Four Springs Park and to set a tentative opening date.

DemEx, which was awarded the contract in August 2018, will receive nearly $10,000 for its work on completing the project.

Plesniak said the park’s opening date will depend on when county commissioners will be able to attend, as the board set a flexible date of Aug. 30 to open the park, which has been planned since 2015.

The $337,000 project was funded in part by a $300,000 Community Conservation Partnerships Program grant.
