Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup needs volunteers

Organizers of the eighth annual Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup on Aug. 24 are asking county residents to come out and help improve a valuable natural recreation venue in the county.

Christina Handley, vice president of the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance, said she needs a minimum of 75 to 100 volunteers to perform the work needed between the Renfrew canoe launch and Connoquenessing Creek Park in Zelienople off Halstead Boulevard.

This year's cleanup efforts are especially important, Handley said, as increased and more intense flooding along the creek has washed large items into the water.

An entire riding lawn mower, a travel trailer that broke up in the creek, two dumpsters and tires used by property owners for retaining walls along the banks are a few of the items languishing in the creek due to flooding.

Another cleanup will be held on Sept. 7 for those who cannot make next Saturday's event or who want to participate twice.
